I’ve done my fair share of brunches on Mother’s Day. And while I love brunch (who doesn’t!), I’m always trying to find new, unique ways to celebrate the day. Mother’s Day gives us a great excuse to get out and do something different. And I love the fact that I can spend a full day on something fun without feeling guilty about not checking my e-mail or cleaning the house. etc. After all, it’s our day – right?! So, I went on my usual internet pursuit and I found these 4 great ideas.
Painting and Wine
Two of my favorite things! I’ve always loved crafting (thanks to my mom), and sipping a little wine while crafting is, well, the perfect way to spend the day in my opinion. I know my mother would agree (I also get the wino gene from her). So, I love all these new shops opening up where you can combine these two favorite activities. Since they are springing up all over and seem to be doing well, I’d say a lot of other women have the same passions.
To find a studio in your area, all you need to do is google ‘wine and painting’. I found over a dozen studios in my city, San Diego. I’m not a painter, but this looks totally doable. They provide all the supplies and instructors take you step-by-step through the process. By the end of the session, you have a finished painting and great memories. This is a great activity to do together in a fun, relaxed setting.
Make A Family Recipe Together
Is your mom famous for a certain family recipe that brings back wonderful memories every time she makes it? How about spending the day in the kitchen making the recipe together? I know, I know, you usually try to stay out of the kitchen on Mother’s Day! But, what a wonderful way to spend quality time with your mother. You’ll be giving her the opportunity to hand down her recipe to the next generation. If you also have children, include them! It can be a multi-generational experience. Handing down family recipes is a time honored tradition and Mother’s Day is a perfect day to honor mother this way.
Take A Mother/Daughter (or Mother/Son) Photo
Hire a professional photographer and have a photo session. Not only will you have a great time, you will end up with a wonderful portrait that you can then gift to her. You can really make a day of it by getting your hair and/or make-up professionally done before the photo shoot. My friend, Cori (in the above picture), took her mother clothes shopping before-hand. They had new outfits, hair and make-up done, the works. Nothing beats a professional portrait – and the photographer will definitely make sure to show you at your best. Your mother will treasure this gift forever.
It seems like vineyards are springing up all over the country. It’s not for California any more! Wine tasting is such a relaxing way to spend the day and chances are, your mother has never been wine tasting. If your mom is anything like mine, she has her one type of wine that she drinks and hasn’t had the opportunity to try different varietals. This will give her the chance to try a lot of different types of wine. A day out in the country, away from the hustle and bustle of the city is perfect. Pack a picnic to make it even more special. And make sure hubby drives. 🙂
How are you planning to celebrate Mother’s Day?
