April Birthstone Choices – It’s Not Just Diamonds

Did you know there are actually several different birthstones for the month of April? Birthstones are categorized as modern, traditional, ancient traditional, and alternative. Different cultures have their own birthstones, so what we may consider the proper birthstone here in the United States, is not necessarily the birthstone they use in other countries.

April gives you a few choices. And if you don’t like one or your budget doesn’t allow for diamonds (which is the most popular birthstone for this month), then you can choose a different stone. It’s always nice to have options!

Modern and Traditional Birthstone – Diamond

This is, by far, the most popular birthstone for the month of April. April birthday girls make out here – who wouldn’t want diamonds for their birthstone? Diamond is the hardest gemstone on earth, and unfortunately, one of the most expensive too. Diamonds can come in many colors, but the April birthstone is the clear, bright white diamond. The April stone is believed to bring good luck, protecting its wearer from misfortune. The diamond symbolizes purity, perfection, and authority, as well as everlasting love.

Ancient Traditional – Sapphire

Sapphire is the ancient traditional birthstone for April in the old Roman, Italian, Russian, Hebrew and Arabic calendar. While blue is the traditional color for sapphire, it also comes in a clear color, which makes it a good choice for the April birthstone.

Alternate – White Topaz and Clear Quartz

If diamonds are out of your price range, then there are alternative stones that are appropriate for this month’s birthstone.

White Topaz is a great alternative if your budget is in the mid-range. Not nearly as pricey as diamonds, but it is still a true gemstone. For example, a one-carat diamond can cost a few thousand dollars, but a white topaz in the same size will be a few hundred dollars. So, if you’re looking for a beautiful, yet higher end alternative for a diamond, white topaz is a great choice. It has great shine and scores an 8 on the hardness scale (diamond is 10).

Clear Quartz  is a fun, easily affordable option and it’s what I offer in my shop.  This is a good option when your budget needs to stay well under $100. It’s also a great choice if you want the clear stone large enough to be the focal point for a necklace or bracelet.
