Oh, the lazy days of summer. August is a time when summer is winding down, back-to-school is on our minds, and there aren’t any ‘official’ holidays to celebrate – or are there? Did you know that August is Family Fun Month? Or August 7th is National Sister’s Day? While we may not be celebrating any federal or state holidays this month, there is no shortage of fun days to celebrate with your loved ones. And I’ve listed my favorite days of the month below.
August Month Celebrations
First, August is Family Fun Month. Enjoy the last days of summer by spending quality time with your loved ones. Simple fun ways to celebrate can include:
- Go out for ice cream
- Have a movie night
- Family bike ride
- Trip to the zoo
- Day at the park
It’s also Happiness Happens Month (bet you haven’t heard of this one!). There is a society called ‘The Secret Society of Happy People’. Their mission is to support people’s right to express their happiness ‘as loud as they want’.
Interesting story how it was founded. It was started in 1998 by Pamela Gail Johnson. She challenged Ann Landers (remember her?) because she was discouraging people from including happy holiday newsletters with their holiday cards. Pamela Johnson demanded an apology “to the millions of people you made feel bad for wanting to share their happy news.”

Let’s Not Forget August Birthdays – Always a Time To Celebrate
August is also one of the top months for birthdays. Just count back 9 months and it doesn’t come as a big surprise. We all know someone celebrating a birthday this month. Here are a few ideas to show that special someone you remember them on their special day.
August Birthstone – Peridot
Peridot signifies friendship and is associated with peace, good fortune, and happiness. It is also believed that the stone can ward away evil and nightmares, thereby bringing peace and comfort to one’s life. If you give the gift of peridot, you are wishing the receiver good fortune and success.
August Flowers – Gladiolus and Poppy.
If giving jewelry isn’t your thing, how about a beautiful bouquet of the either gladiolus or poppies? This is a great idea for a fellow office worker or client. It’s a thoughtful, personal gift that shows you remembered their birthday.
The gladiolus represents remembrance, calm, integrity, and infatuation.
Depending on the color, the poppy represents..
Red poppies represent pleasure and the yellow poppy represents wealth and success.
As you can see, there’s a lot to celebrate and enjoy in August! How will you celebrate?
