While most months only have one birthstone, there are two birthstones that represent the month of October – Opal and Pink Tourmaline.
While each of these stones signify hope, creativity and innocence, there are distinct differences between the two. Depending on the recipient, you may want to choose one over the other.
Opal is associated with faithfulness and confidence. The word opal comes from the Latin word opalus which means precious jewel. Opals are very complex gemstones and contain various colors, therefore the ancient romans believed it was the most precious of all jewels. The ancient Greeks believed wearing opal would give them the gift of prophecy and guarded them from disease. Opal necklaces were worn to repel evil and guarantee good health.
Opal is also the stone that signifies the 14th year of marriage.
Tourmaline comes in various shades of red, pinks and peach, greens, yellow, and deep blue. Each color is a vivid, deep color.
This stone symbolizes love and other matters of the heart. Relaxing and nurturing, pink tourmaline is also associated with feminine energies. It is known to heal emotional wounds and bring feelings of comfort and safety.
October Flower – Marigold
Marigolds are the October flower of the month. While there are over 40 species of the marigolds, all types of Marigolds offer the same basic meanings because they all share the same bright yellow, red, or orange color. While some cultures such as the Victorian era and Mexican culture regard the marigold as a symbol of grief and sympathy, other cultures have focused on the sunny bright colors of this flower, giving it a meaning of optimism and success instead. Marigolds were used as love charms in the Middle Ages by suitors who wanted to attract someone new.
Because of their bright cheery colors, marigolds are a great flower to give someone if they are feeling down and need comfort.
